Dylan Covers Forum: Week 1

It's been a week since I opened The Dylan Covers Forum. So far there isn't much activity, but a few people have registered. One thread has received over 100 views, so there must be some unregistered readers, too.
Please consider joining the Forum if you want to ask a question, or maybe answer one, express an opinion, review an album, start a discussion, post some Dylan cover news, or anything else on your mind.
My hope is for the Forum to become more interactive, with other members starting topics and participating in discussions.
Otherwise, I'll just be talking to myself :)

New: Alan Lorber's Dylan Covers

Iris Music Group has release another mini-album of Dylan covers, this one a compilation of tracks produced by legendary Boss-town Sound producer Alan Lorber, simply titled Dylan Covers. (There is also a Beatles Covers for those interested.)
While they are advertised as "full-length" albums, most of the releases in the series have only a few tracks and clock in at under or barely over 20 minutes (yet are priced at $15.89!) This one has only 7 tracks.
The first track is titled Dylan Epitaph/Dylan Overture by the Alan Lorber Orchestra, I'm guessing an instrumental medley? Lorber also covers Lay Lady Lay, the only other new-to-me track.
The remainder are 1966-70 covers One Too Many Mornings by Erik, I Shall Be Released by Kyle Garrahan and It Takes A Lot To Laugh by Phluph, with the exception of 2004's All Along The Watchtower by the Michael Packer Blues Band.
The "album" has been added to Dylan Cover Albums HERE.
The album is available from the Iris Music Group Store.

Apparently this series is now available on physical discs, I don't know if they're CDs or CD-Rs, so I have moved last year's Alan Lorber Orchestra release from the Downloads page to the Instrumental pages HERE.
This release is available from the Iris Music Group Store, and also from various download vendors such as eMusic.
The just released Dylan Covers will likely be available from download sites also.

NEW: DylanCover.com Forum

I have added a Forum page to DylanCover.com.
If you want to ask a question, or maybe answer one, express an opinion, review an album, start a discussion, post some Dylan cover news, or anything else on your mind, visit the DylanCover.com Forum. A quick registration is required.
Judging by past attempts to make the site more interactive, I doubt the Forum will be very active, but time will tell. After the decline and recent apparent demise of the DylanPool forum, and the general disinterest in Dylan covers at other Dylan related newsgroups or forums I have read, maybe there is a place for it.
I'll drop in a few times daily to see if there is any activity. As of this post, I'm the only member :(

Various Various updates

Two updates on the Various Artists pages of Dylan Cover Albums:

Added a scan and info of the cassette release of The Songs of Bob Dylan on the Start label. Unlike the abridged single CD version, the double MC has all 32 tracks from the double LP.

Added info of the Canadian issue of Listen To Bob Dylan - a Tribute, with the same catalog number as the US release but adding EMI logos on the discs & back. I did not add another scan since the reddish color is the same as the Australian version, although the artwork crop may be slightly different.
Thanks to Ronald Born for both of these.

You can call it New Age, easy listening, contemporary instrumental, or elevator music... by any label, it's just another bland instrumental version of Blowin' In The Wind
. There are no further credits on this CD, other than an advertisement for a Christmas CD by the same group.

Condolences...

It's with sadness I report the passing of Kevin Kent of South Africa. Kevin was a long-time contributor to DylanCover.com and an avid trader of Beatles & other artists as well as Dylan & Dylan covers. He was my sole contact in that part of the world, keeping me informed of South African Dylan covers both new & old.
My condolences to his wife & family.

I received this rare cover from him in our last trade. A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall is from the rare self-titled LP by South African folksinger Rod Bolin, recorded live at the University of Cape Town, in March & May of 1966. (Folk Records LP663)

Die antwort weiß ganz allein der wind

(3:13)
Marie Vell
Frei zu sein
CD-single:
Songhouse;
2006 (Germany)

I haven't been able to find any biographical info about Marie Vell. This single is the only release by her I found on-line. Her rather ordinary version of the oft-used Hans Bradtke translation of Blowin' In The Wind is listed as a bonus track on the 3-track CD. The title track and the 2nd track, Ich weiß was ich will, are originals with her lyrics and music by Hinrich Vogt.

Sherwin Linton & Cleo Bee

Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather (2:25)
Sherwin Linton and Cleo Bee
with The Cotton Kings
single b/w You'll Be Kissin' Me
45: Black Gold BG 45 7115;
rec. 1968 - rel.1971 (US)

Sherwin Linton is a still active rockabilly & country singer from Bob's home state of Minnesota. His music career dates back to 1956, and he was among the first Midwest artists to cover Dylan, with mid-60s recordings of Girl From The North Country (release info unknown.) This 1968 duet of Boots with Cleo Bee and Sherwin's band The Cotton Kings was recorded in Chicago.
For more Linton-Dylan connections, read the March 2004 entry on his website's "Current News" page.

New in Near-Misses: Saturday Nite Fish Fry

It's been a long time since I've added any albums to the Near-Misses pages of Dylan Cover Albums. The Near-Misses pages are for albums that don't qualify for inclusion on the main pages, but have enough Dylan content to deserve a mention.
This new album by the Canadian group Saturday Nite Fish Fry has 6 Dylan covers among it's 13 tracks, including the title track (the CD has also been added to Title Tracks, see previous post below.)
In addition to Dirt Road Blues, the blues and soul ensemble do the rarely covered 10,000 Men, 2X2, and Lonesome Day Blues, as well as the not-quite-so-rare Blowin' In The Wind :).
Vocals are by album producer & keyboardist Bill King, except 2X2 is sung by Shakura S'Aida, and the 2 singers alternate verses on Lonesome Day Blues.
As a bonus track, It Ain't Me Babe is performed by The Roomies and the Rockit 88 Band (the female background singers on the CD and the rhythm section of Saturday Nite Fish Fry.)
If you like horn-fueled blues and soul, this CD is for you.
Listed at Dylan Cover Albums HERE.

Downloads & streams

A cover of You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go by Italian duo Bruno & Mario is available HERE. The 1985 home recording by Bruno Cattivelli & Mario Di Giammarco had previously been available on the now defunct They All Play On Penny Whistles fan covers website. This new posting is a higher quality mp3.

A cover of Masters Of War by the Victoria BC, Canada crust punk metal band Iskra is available on their website. The track from their 2003(?) self-titled album is unrecognizable, but the album notes credit Dylan and discuss the song. Not for the faint-of-heart!

Whole Wheat Radio (WWR) is an Alaska-based, listener-programmed webcast that includes many Dylan covers in its playlist, including the complete Dylan cover albums from Big Brass Bed (listed under Rod MacDonald,) Dennis Heller, Pat Nevins, and Bob Dylan Uncovered (these links to the album details at Dylan Cover Albums.) Several covers available were new to me, including an exclusive WWR house concert performance of The Times They Are A-Changin' by folksinger Johnsmith, and several by Alaskan s/s Larry Zarella. Some other new artists and/or new covers I discovered are from The Co-Dependents, Ray Weaver, Steve Norris, John Vandiver, Garrett & Westcott, Organ Failure and Roger “Hurricane” Wilson.
Free registration is required to request songs. Once registered use the "Make requests" search to search for "Dylan" in the "tags" field. It's a Wiki based system, so the search isn't perfect due to overuse of the Dylan tag for similar sounding artists, but searching for the Dylan tag lists many (though likely not all) of the Dylan covers available.
Once requested, songs are placed in a queue. There is a limit to requests allowed per day per listener, and songs are blocked for a couple days after being requested to avoid overplaying. Low-speed and hi-speed versions of the webcast are available.

Half Pint

Wanted Man (3:13)
Half Pint
Closer To You
CD: Half Pint Music HP680753; 1999 (Jamaica)

Half Pint's reggae version of Wanted Man is not credited to Bob Dylan, it's labeled only as "adapted," but despite some globalized and reggae-fied lyrics it's obviously a cover of Dylan's song.
"Wanted man in New York City, wanted man in Tokyo, wanted man down in Jamaica, wanted man in Mexico..."
and
"Wherever you may jam tonight you'll find me jammin' too."
