All tracklists and artwork for Volumes 1 through 23 are now complete.

The collections are available on-line via BitTorrent at dimeadozen.org.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Merrill

Don't Think Twice, It's All Right (3:59)
Merrill
Under the Island Sky
CD: HiYo Music HY-M198; 1998 (US)

Another obscure cover without much information available. All I know about Merrill is that he is a singer-songwriter from Florida. In the liner notes he says he's been playing for 20 years. The only contact info on the 9 year old CD is a web link to the now defunct IUMA. I couldn't find a new site for Merrill or HiYo Music, or any evidence of other recordings. On this collection he sings an acoustic Don't Think Twice, pleasant but standard fare. There are 2 originals plus songs by Kate Wolf, John Stewart, John Prine, Tom Paxton, Merle Travis and others.
Found on eBay for 99¢.

Troy Shaw

The notes decribe this as "a series of songs that are central to the worship experience at Meadow Creek Foursquare Church" (in Issaquah, Washington.) Gotta Serve Somebody is sung by Troy Shaw with The Troyets, and electric guitar by Rick Azim. The album is no longer listed on the Meadow Creek website. Unknown if it was issued on other formats. Found on eBay for 49¢.

Forever Young (3:42)
George Hamilton IV
George Hamilton IV
LP: Dot MCA-39033; 1985 (US)

This is the second of three versions of Forever Young that George Hamilton IV, "the Ambassador of Country Music," recorded. More well known is the version that served as the title track for his 1979 album, and was also issued as a single.
This 1985 version is from his self-titled first album for Dot Records, produced by Billy Strange.
More recently, his third version of the song appeared on the 2006 CD Heritage and Legacy: 50th Anniversary, available from amazon.com.

New in the DylanCover.com collection:
Penny Lang

One Too Many Mornings (3:56)
Penny Lang
Stone+Sand+Sea+Sky
CD: Borealis BCD176; 2006 (Canada)

Penny Lang, "the first lady of Canadian folk," was playing the Toronto folk clubs when Bob was doing the same in Greenwich Village. This, her latest, is a fine folk album with a very nice rendition of One Too Many Mornings.
This is Penny's 3rd Dylan cover that I know of, following 1992's Walkin' Down The Line and 1999's Love Minus Zero/No Limit.
I have added a Penny Lang page to Collector's Guides.

New in the DylanCover.com collection:
Three Bean Salad

Tangled Up In Blue (5:46)
Three Bean Salad
Shut Up and Eat Your Beans
CD: Blue Indian BIR002; 2001 (US)

Los Angeles punk revival band Three Bean Salad recorded this, their first album, in 2001, 14 years after forming in 1987. Some of the other covers on the album, including Ring Of Fire, Gloria and See That My Grave Is Kept Clean, get typical punkish makeovers, but Tangled Up In Blue is a more "normal" version. The lead vocal is a growl, close to latter-day Bob.
Apparently the CD is out-of-print, and the label website is defunct.

Bill Moss and The Celestials

You've Got To Serve Somebody (4:48)
Bill Moss and The Celestials
Come On The Lord's Side
MC: Jewel JC-0165; 1980 (US)

Possibly the first cover of one of Dylan's "Gospel" songs by a true Gospel performer, Detroit's Bill Moss and The Celestials.
The 1980 LP (Jewel LPS 0165) is hard to find. The track also appeared on a single, as the B-side to Rise Again (Jewel 270.) The image shown is cropped from my cassette version of the album, found for 99¢. As far as I know the album or track has not been released on CD.

New in the DylanCover.com collection:
Julia Samms

Knocking On Heaven's Door (3:37)
Julia Samms
single
45: Brown Sugar (no number); 1990 (Jamaica)

Keeping with the Reggae theme from the previous post, here is an obscure Jamaican 45 by Julia Samms, dated 1990.
The B-side is labeled only "Version," and is just the backing track without vocal. I did not list it as a separate cover since it has no discernable KOHD melody.
This 45 has been added to the Reggae Collector's Guide.

60s Hits Reggae Style

You might skip over this UK Castle Pulse label compilation in a store, assuming the tracks to be by some knock-off studio group, but it is original Jamaican recordings from the Trojan and Creole labels.
Included on Disc 1 of the 2 disc set are 5 Dylan covers, all available on other compilations or artist's CDs, but it's covenient to have them all together.
Hearing the 35 other familiar 60's tunes done Reggae-style is cool too.

Blowin' In The Wind - Earnest Ranglin (instrumental)
It Ain't Me Babe - Bob & Marcia (Bob Andy & Marcia Griffiths duet)
Mr. Tambourine Man - Ken Boothe (original single released as by Keith Hudson)
I Shall Be Released - Inner Circle (although credited to his group here, this is the Jacob Miller solo version from his LP Jacob "Killer" Miller)
Lay Lady Lay - Bob Andy

First-of-month updates for May 1, 2007

The Dylan Covers DataBase has been updated, adding 351 new covers for a new total of 18,519.
The DataBase now lists over 900 covers of All Along The Watchtower and 800 covers of Blowin' In The Wind. These numbers are deceiving... Blowin' has been covered by many more artists, while the Watchtower count includes many multiple performances by the same artists (e.g., 85 by The Grateful Dead and 66 by Dave Matthews, etc.)
Also 123 new images and many new links were added.
Click here to view New Additions Only
