New in the DylanCover.com collection: Tracks

All Along The Watchtower
Tracks
The Very Best of Tracks 1969-1974
CD: Boston Skyline BCD111; rec.1970 - 1991 CD (US)

Tracks was formed at New Hampshire's Dartmouth College in 1969. They performed at clubs and frat houses throughout northern New England, Boston and Philadelphia.
All Along The Watchtower was considered their signature song, this 8:24 studio version was recorded in Boston, February 1970. The band self-released a 3-LP set of their recordings in 1975, later condensed for this 1991 CD release. In the notes, there is a quote from a Boston radio music director: "Real gems of early '70s rock, with flashes of Yes and Mahavishnu... The best Watchtower on record!" High praise indeed, although Jimi fans may disagree!

This CD appears to be out-of-print, but used copies are often available from:
amazon.com / amazon.co.uk / amazon.de / amazon.ca

Maria Muldaur's Heart of Mine and The Jamie Saft Trio's Trouble have been added to the Dylan Title Tracks album pages.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Sonoma

Don't Think Twice, It's All Right
Sonoma
Sonoma
LP: Dunhill DSX-50156; 1973 (US)

Not much information is available about the California 2-man & 2-woman quartet Sonoma, but they played a rockin' piano version of Don't Think Twice on their 1973 self-titled LP, with a male lead and female background vocals. Group members were Charlie Merriam, Kathy Ward, Tricia Johns and Steve Adler. Merriam wrote the band's original songs. Several more familiar names played on the album sessions, including Larry Carlton, Wilton Felder, Joe Osborn, Jim Gordon and Michael Omartian.

New cover: Steve Hackett

Ex-Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett covers Man in the Long Black Coat on his upcoming album Wild Orchids, to be released 9/12.
Thanks to Michael Tearson for the tip.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Jon Hamar

My Back Pages
instrumental (4:01)
Jon Hamar
Basso Profundo
CD: Pony Boy Records PB50137-2; 2003 (US)

My Back Pages has been a favorite Dylan tune to cover for jazz musicians since The Keith Jarrett Trio's 1968 version fom their Somewhere Before LP. The bassist on that recording was Charlie Haden, and as a tribute Seattle's Jon Hamar models his recording after Haden's bass part. Possibly the only solo bass Dylan cover? Basso Profundo is listed in the Jazz Collector's Guide.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Sonic Love Affair

It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
Sonic Love Affair
SLA
CD: Dollar Record Records DRR 014; 2005 (US)

Although recorded in 2004, for an idea of what this Sonic Love Affair cover of Baby Blue sounds like, imagine a '60s garage band trying their best to sound like the Rolling Stones, filtered through California psych. Even the album art has a '60s look. Retro prices too, used copies can be had for less than $1 from amazon.com.
The originals that make up the rest of the album are mostly in the Sacramento, California band's more contemporary punk-rock style.

Mountain does Dylan

From the Mountain website (near bottom of page):
"Mountain is working hard on the new Bob Dylan Tribute Album with Warren Haynes and other special guest musicians. It's going to be a must have for Mountain and Dylan fans alike... Leslie (West) played guitar on Ozzie's Boxed set release last year and Ozzy (Osbourne) will be returning the favor by singing on the new upcoming Dylan tribute album... The band hopes to be releasing it's new album of Bob Dylan covers in the very near future."

NOT a new addition

At first glance, it appears this A Concert: Behind Prison Walls LP includes a rare mid-'70s live version of I'll Be Your Baby Tonight by Linda Ronstadt.
However...
On the back of the LP it reads: "contains several selections from that show - together with other hits that made these stars famous." Selections in this case apparently meant songs, not performances, as all of the tracks on this LP are the regular studio recordings by Linda, Johnny Cash and Roy Clark.
NAPA auto parts stores sold this deceptively titled ©1978 LP after sponsoring the A Concert: Behind Prison Walls TV special, but the album has no content from the broadcast. The TV concert is now available on CD and DVD, but neither contains Linda doing Baby Tonight, so I assume it was one of the "other hits" and not a "selection from the show."
I have added the album to the Linda Ronstadt Collector's Guide for future reference.

Hornsby & friends cover Mighty Quinn

The DVD included with the Bruce Hornsby box set Intersections [1985-2005] includes a cover of The Mighty Quinn, featuring B.B. King, Lou Reed, and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on guitars. The 1990 video at China Club in Los Angeles is from the Showtime series Coast-to-Coast hosted by Herbie Hancock.
Thanks to Michael Tearson for the tip & info.

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Widespread Panic

Solid Rock
Widespread Panic
Earth To America
CD: Sanctuary 06076-84780-2; 2006 (US)

Solid Rock is another rarely covered Dylan song. The Dylan Covers DataBase only listed 3 other official release versions before Widespread Panic included it on their CD earlier this year. Only the Gotta Serve Somebody Gospel tribute track by Sounds of Blackness is easy to find and a good quality recording. Widespread Panic performed the song live many times during 2005-06, some of these performances are available from bt.etree.org.

Included is this 1997 CD Live At Sir George Williams University, a 1967 Dave Van Ronk concert in Montreal that includes a cover of the rare Dylan song Man On The Street, titled as The Old Man.
This is the 103rd Artist Collector's Guide.

New Covers: Dick Foley & Terry Lauber / David Roth

Folk Era Records has released Sing It Again, a newly recorded CD from former Brothers Four members Dick Foley & Terry Lauber. Dick was a founding member of The Brothers Four, leaving in 1990 to be replaced by Terry who was with the act until 2004. The album of 19 folk era favorites, and one new song, includes a cover of Tomorrow Is A Long Time.
Available exclusively from Rediscover Music.

American singer-songwriter David Roth has released More Pearls, an album of cover songs on Germany's Stockfisch Records. Included is a cover of Blowin' In The Wind.
More info at Stockfisch Records.

New addition to Dylan Covers on non-Dylan tributes

The 73rd album added to the Dylan Covers on non-Dylan Tributes page is The Songs of John Lee Hooker: Boom Boom and more, a 2005 CD by the Italian singer Bobby Solo, with a cover of It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry. I know of no connection between Hooker and the song, so why it's included is a mystery, he certainly recorded enough songs in his 50+ year career to fill a tribute CD! Hooker never released a Dylan cover, although some Dylan cover lists include his Just Like A Woman, but this is a Hooker original recorded pre-1950, obviously not the Dylan song!
Thanks to Dirk Krah for the suggestion

New in the DylanCover.com collection: Megan Reilly

Wedding Song
Megan Reilly
Let Your Ghost Go
CD: Carrott Top Records SAKI038; 2006 (US)

Wedding Song is one of the most under-covered Dylan songs. This uptempo version from earlier this year was the only normally distributed version in the Dylan Covers DataBase before the recently added Maria Muldaur track. There are also a half-dozen self-released or unreleased versions listed.

New in Dylan Cover Albums: Jamie Saft Trio

Now officially added to Dylan Cover Albums is Trouble: The Jamie Saft Trio Plays Bob Dylan. The 8-track jazz CD includes 6 instrumentals and 2 guest vocals: Ballad of A Thin Man by Mike Patton (lead singer of Faith No More from 1988 to 1998, and also Mr. Bungle, Tomahawk, Fantômas and Peeping Tom) and Living The Blues by Antony (of Antony and the Johnsons.)
(Note: due to the 2 vocal tracks, I have listed the CD in the Vocals section)
Jamie Saft plays piano & Hammond organ, with Greg Cohen on contrabass and Ben Perowsky on drums.
My 2 favorite tracks are the 2 organ tracks - Dignity is reminiscent of Brother Jack McDuff or Booker T., while Disease of Conceit is in a different, hymn-like style, a fitting album closer.
Trouble has also been added to the Jazz Dylan Covers Collector's Guide.

More info is available at jamiesaft.com and Tzadik

The tracklist:
What Was It You Wanted
Ballad of a Thin Man (vocal by Mike Patton)
Dignity
God Knows
Trouble
Dirge
Living the Blues (vocal by Antony)
Disease of Conceit

Release date is August 22.
