For anyone out there who, like me, has always been in awe of what Dylan and the Band accomplished in that pink house in upstate NY, I URGE you to check out the recently released CD by one of New York's most honest and agile musicians---Howard Fishman! His band performed the entire Basement Tapes catalog (around 75 total songs) during a 3 night stint at Joe's Pub in NYC last May. I went to the 1st show and was so amazed that I couldn't resist going back for the 2nd and 3rd! What a treat! I never thought any of those unreleased Basement Tapes songs would ever see the light of day! It was wonderful to hear what I'd always considered to be Dylan's unfinished and "lost" masterpiece-- "I'm Not There (1956)." Fishman's rendition of this was nothing less than jaw-dropping! There were too many highlights to mention here. Well...one more.......what he did with "Crash on the Levee" was pure genius!
Somehow the folks at Lincoln Center caught wind of what Fishman had pulled off and invited him to perform for one night, Feb 1st (?) 2007 as part of their series on "The American Songbook." Naturally I was there. Amazing! Fishman mentioned that a live CD and DVD containing highlights from the original Joe's Pub performances was officially being released that evening. I couldn't wait to get my hands on it after the show! I listened to it for the entire 4 hours I spent driving back to Boston that night! That drive had never seemed so short. I'm still listening to it on a daily basis and, as with most of Dylan's albums, I don't think I'll ever hear it the same way twice. This CD is truly a "must have" for even the casual Dylan fan. I'd even say it's a "must have" for anyone interested in the history of American music. I'm even considering going to Chicago next month to see Fishman and his band perform these songs again at the Steppenwolf Theater! Do all of us Dylan fans a favor and get behind this project in hopes that Fishman will extend this tour to other cities, and perhaps (and this is my greatest hope) even release another CD containing more songs from his marathon performance at Joe's Pub.
